LIFE Climate Forest makes a targeted contribution to communicating the opportunities of climate-smart forest management and thus the development towards resilient and vital forests, which can continue to provide their valuable products and services in the future.

In this seven-year project, project partners Staatsbosbeheer and the Bosgroepen will work on all these aspects of climate-smart forest management. Together with forest managers, owners, policymakers and other stakeholders. Among other things, in demo forests and reference forests and through training courses, field excursions and symposiums. Sharing knowledge is one of the most important parts of the project.

Essence : Increasing resilience of forest ecosystems through climate-smart management.
Duration : September 2020 - August 2027.
Partners : Forestry Commission and Forest Groups
Budget : €5,256,662 (of which €2,891,164 LIFE grant)

We look at how a protective forest climate can help in the pursuit of greater resilience and what this requires in terms of management measures. For instance, we test which species, provenances and planting methods are most suitable and and how we can contribute to successful rejuvenation with wildlife protection. We carefully monitor all these choices.

There is also a focus on refining the method so that it is a financially and ecologically sound tree-oriented approach and a sustainable management model, maximising the chances of successful implementation of this management type.

LIFE Climate Forest at a glance

The structure of LIFE Climate Forest is as follows:

Essence of project: Increasing the resilience of forest ecosystems through climate-smart management

Project goals

The project shows what is needed for effective implementation of climate-smart forest management; a small-scale and tree-oriented management type. Knowledge sharing plays an important role here. Thus, LIFE Climate Forest aims to encourage development towards climate-smart forest and to engage and inspire the forest management community by showing that it can be done and how. We look at how a protective forest climate can help in the pursuit of greater resilience and what this requires in terms of management measures.

Partners

The project is an initiative of te Bosgroepen and Staatsbosbeheer:

Staatsbosbeheer was founded in1899 and manages 273,000 hectares of forest, nature and landscape and 1,900 built objects in the Netherlands. They are an independent public-law organisation with a statutory duty, falling within the domain of the Ministry of LNV. Staatsbosbeheer plays an important role in the realisation of national and international nature objectives, outdoor recreation near urban agglomerations and the preservation of landscape monuments. It employs some 11,000 people and receives millions of visitors every year.

De Bosgroepen are independent cooperative associations of and for owners of forest and nature estates. They advise and relieve members in the sustainable management of forest and nature. More than 1,500 members are affiliated to the three regional Bosgroepen throughout the Netherlands. These are private individuals, foundations, estates, abbeys, care institutions, nature conservation organisations, water companies and governments, such as water boards, defence and municipalities. Together, the members own or manage over 400,000 hectares of forest and nature.

LIFE programme

Project LIFE Climate Forest has received funding from the European Union's LIFE programme. This programme aims to support innovative projects that fit into European nature, environment and climate policies, and that further develop or put these policies into practice.
