Experiments Beegderheide should better arm nature
- In the forests of the Beegderheide nature reserve (province of Limburg), forest experts from Bosgroep Zuid Nederland go about their work with almost surgical precision. In this example forest of LIFE Climate Forest, small scale and mixing with more tree species is central. Dagblad De Limburger devoted an article to it...
That the Beegderheide is one of the demonstration forests is because of the willingness of forest owners such as the Maasgouw municipality, State Forestry Administration and a private individual to participate. "We have seen Norway spruce dying before. Those trees were already weakened. An insect like the letterpress then provides the final blow. Our approach should ensure that the forests become more vital. We anticipate the changes."
At first glance, the small-scale approach makes forest management more laborious than a more traditional method. Part of the advantage of removing trees on a limited scale is that the forest climate remains largely intact. Per hectare, 10-20 groups of trees are planted. Forest experts give space to future trees by cutting down trees that push them away. Interventions also allow more vulnerable species to last longer. After all, a tree with a stronger root system and larger crown will last longer.
What works must ultimately be shown in practice. Sometimes the results are only visible after a decade or so. Because of the challenges, forest managers are now experimenting and gaining experience in this example forest of LIFE Climate Forest, among others.
